Two Nigerien journalists who have been behind bars since November 2025 on public order charges were released on Wednesday, according to their families and a judicial source.
Youssouf Seriba, editor-in-chief of the online outlet Les Echos du Niger, and Oumarou Kane, editor of Le Herisson newspaper, were jailed for "complicity in disseminating a document liable to disturb public order".
Niger has been ruled since 2023 by a military regime that overthrew the elected president Mohamed Bazoum. The coup has seen journalists, activists and civil society figures jailed.
"Good news has just come in: Youssouf Seriba and Oumarou Kane have just been released," a relative of the journalists told AFP.
A judicial source confirmed their release, without providing further details.
The two journalists were detained in connection with the leak of an invitation to a press briefing by the Solidarity Front, a body created by the junta to call on the population for financial support.
It ended up on social networks and was used by associates of Bazoum to criticise the regime.
A third journalist detained for the same reason remains in custody.
According to the United Nations, 13 journalists were arrested in Niger in 2025. Three of them, including the correspondent of German outlet Deutsche Welle, were freed in May.
