Germany is "very worried" that attacks on oil tankers in the Red Sea by Yemen's Houthi militants risk escalation of the conflict in the region, Berlin's defence minister said Thursday.
The situation in the Middle East is "clearly moving in the wrong direction," Defence Minister Boris Pistorius said while on a visit to a facility belonging to armaments firm Hensoldt.
"At present, nothing -- absolutely nothing -- suggests that a ceasefire, let alone peace, could be reached" in the region, he said.
The Iran-backed Houthis declared a blockade of Saudi ports earlier this week, and reports of fresh attacks on tankers sent oil prices climbing on Thursday.
The European Union's top diplomat condemned the attacks earlier on Thursday, while European Central Bank President Christine Lagarde called the latest developments "alarming" and warned of continued economic fallout from the conflict.
Pistorius said the situation has "dire consequences" for all countries relying on energy supplies from the region.
