Russia will 'definitely' respond to Ukraine ATACMS strike: Kremlin

Russia will "definitely" respond to a Ukrainian attack on a southern airfield using US-supplied ATACMS missiles, the Kremlin said Thursday.

President Vladimir Putin has previously threatened to launch its new hypersonic ballistic missile, named Oreshnik, at the centre of Kyiv if Ukraine does not halt its attacks on Russian territory using US-supplied ATACMS missiles.

Russia's defence ministry on Wednesday accused Ukraine of firing the missiles in an overnight attack on an airfield in the port city of Taganrog in the southern Rostov region.

A response "will follow when, and in a way that is deemed, appropriate. It will definitely follow," Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov told reporters.

He did not provide details of how Russia might retaliate.

Washington only recently gave Kyiv permission to fire ATACMS on Russian territory, following months of requests.

The United States warned Wednesday that Russia could be preparing to fire Oreshnik missiles at Ukraine again.

The US warning was "based on an intelligence assessment that it's possible that Russia could use this Oreshnik missile in the coming days," Deputy Pentagon Press Secretary Sabrina Singh told journalists.

Both sides have escalated aerial attacks in recent months as Russia's troops advance on the battlefield.

Russia's defence ministry said Thursday its troops had recaptured a settlement in the western Kursk region, where Ukraine launched a shock cross-border offensive in August.

It also said it had captured a tiny settlement in Ukraine's eastern Donetsk region, where it has been grinding forward for months.

Trump 'vehemently' opposed to Ukraine firing missiles deep into Russia
New York (AFP) Dec 12, 2024 - US President-elect Donald Trump said in an interview published Thursday that he disagrees "very vehemently" with Ukraine firing American-supplied missiles deep into Russia.

But Trump insisted he would not abandon Ukraine as US support for Kyiv would be key leverage in efforts to bring the war to a close.

Outgoing President Joe Biden's administration has supplied long-range ATACMS missiles to Ukraine which can penetrate inside Russia, provoking angry retaliation from Moscow which has responded with its new hypersonic missile.

"I disagree very vehemently with sending missiles hundreds of miles into Russia. Why are we doing that?" Trump said in an interview with Time Magazine which named him its "person of the year" on Thursday.

"I think it's a foolish decision."

ATACMS missiles have a maximum range of 190 miles (300 kilometers) according to publicly available data.

The interview was conducted before Thanksgiving and Trump's high-profile meeting with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky brokered by France's president on the sidelines of the reopening of Notre Dame cathedral.

"We're just escalating this war and making it worse," he added.

Pressed on his support for Ukraine, which has been lukewarm with the Republican questioning the cost of backing Kyiv, Trump said he would use Washington's backing as leverage to bring the war to a close.

"I want to reach an agreement and the only way you're going to reach an agreement is not to abandon."

Russian news agencies have jumped on Trump's comments, drawing attention to the Republican's apparent criticism of Kyiv's approach.

White House spokesman John Kirby said he was "not going to get into a back and forth" with Trump's incoming administration over the remarks.

"All I can do is reiterate what President Biden's policy and guidance has been, and that is to do everything we can... so that if and when this comes to some sort of negotiation, that President Zelensky is in the best possible position," he told reporters.

Sydney (AFP) Dec 10, 2024
An Australian warship has test-fired a US Tomahawk cruise missile, officials said Tuesday, hailing a "major milestone" in the country's decade-long plan to beef up its fleet in the face of an Asia-Pacific arms race. HMAS Brisbane fired the Tomahawk on December 3 off the west coast of the United States, Australia's government said in a statement, making it one of only three countries alongside the US and Britain to acquire and fire the missile.
